David Freerksen. Code monkey.

Born in Oklahoma. Raised in Texas.

My hometown is Waxahachie, Texas. I went to the Art Institute of Dallas after high school. After college and a few years working, I joined the Marine Corps as an Infantry Mortarman (0341). I was stationed in Kanehoe Bay, Hawaii and was combat deployed once to Afghanistan. After I got out of the the Marine Corps I went back to programming. After a year I moved to California to be closer to my military friends. Once I got here they all got married and had kids or joined the military again.

I have been working with computers since 1995. My very first computer was an Apple Mac Performa 405. It was a family computer. I first got into HTML and programming when I bought my first personal computer in 1997. Angelfire and Geocities helped me learn HTML and Javascript. After high school I went to the Art Institute of Dallas for graphic design. After the first semester I switched my major to web design/multimedia after I realized I really suck at design. It was a good decision because code just always made sense in my head.

Every programming position I have ever taken never end up the way they started. One company I was with I was hired as a Flex developer. Eventually that migrated to Javascript development. Eventually it moved to XHTML, CSS, and Javascript. Eventually that turned into PHP development.

I type with three fingers. Left thumb is used for the space bar. Left and right index fingers are used type all of the other keys. Needless to say I have to look at the keyboard to type. But I can type a lot faster than you think with those three fingers!

Hobbies and Favorites

Hobbies
Watching movies from Netflix, killing terrorists and enemies of the United States on the XBox 360, playing with my dog, and going to the gym.
Command Center
My laptop is a 15” Apple MacBook Pro w/ 2.66GHz Core 2 Duo and 4Gb RAM, MAC OSX Snow Leopard, with an Apple wireless keyboard and Magic Mouse. My desktop is an Apple Mac Mini w/ 2.53GHz Core 2 Duo and 4Gb RAM, MAC OSX Snow Leopard, with an Apple keyboard with numeric keypad and Magic Mouse. There are a few external hard drives, speakers, routers, and more than my fair share of cables strewn about the room as well.
Favorite OS
I have two Macs so Mac is my favorite. I hate Vista. I like XP and Windows 7 a lot. For server environments I prefer Unix. The only time I really use Windows it to test things in Internet Explorer. I have both Windows XP and Ubuntu as Boot Camp drives on my Mac Mini. If it wasn’t for Vista, I would have never bought a Mac. So thank you, Microsoft, for convincing me to buy a Mac.
Favorite Language, Framework, and Library
PHP, CodeIgniter, and jQuery. PHP because it is very smart and very fast. CodeIgniter because it lightweight and easily expandable. jQuery because it is lightweight, very fast, and easy to learn and develop in.
Favorite Software
I don’t know how I would be productive without Alfred. After Alfred, I think Dreamweaver and Dropbox would have to be my next favorites. Spaces on the Mac rock too.
